Bovine Leukosis (LEB)


Introduction: Leptospirosis is a transmissible disease of animals and humans caused by any of the pathogenic members of the genus Leptospira. In bovines it can produce mastitis, persistent urinary tract infection, embryonic death, abortions and death of newborn calves. Acute leptospirosis should be suspected in the face of the sudden appearance of agalactia (in adult and sheep dairy cattle); jaundice and hemoglobinuria, especially in young animals. Chronic leptospirosis should be considered when abortion occurs, stillbirths, birth of weak animals (may be premature); and infertility. The location and persistence of leptospiras in the kidney and in the genital tract of males and females are two important chronic microbiological sequelae resulting in carrier animals throughout life and serve as a reservoir of infection for animals and humans. Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR)


Introduction: Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) is caused by bovine herpes virus type I (BoHV-I) of the genus Varicellovirus of the family Herpesviridae, the viral genome consists of double-stranded DNA.
The disease presents clinical symptoms of the upper respiratory tract, such as purulent rhinorrhea and conjunctivitis, the general symptoms are fever, prostration, inappetence, abortion and decreased milk production.
Genital infection can cause vulvovaginitis or balanoposthitis when natural riding is practiced. Many infections follow a subclinical course. In a genital infection, BoHV-1 replicates in the mucous membrane of the vagina and foreskin, and latent in the sacral lymph nodes. Stress, such as that produced by transport or delivery, can induce the reactivation of latent infection. The virus can, therefore, spread intermittently.
The semen of an infected bull can contain BoHv-1 and the virus can be transmitted by natural mountaineering and artificial insemination.

Detection of Campylobacter subspecies Venerealis


Introduction: Genital Bovine Campylobacteriosis (CGB) is a sexually transmitted disease caused by Campylobacter fetus subsp. venerealis, C. fetus subsp. venerealis intermedius biotype and C.fetus subsp. fetus (Campero, 2000). This disease is characterized by producing temporary infertility in females, early embryonic mortality and occasional abortions (Campero et al., 2005; Eaglesome and Garcia, 1992). The CGB has been reported in different parts of the world, in Australia it is the main venereal disease (Aliyu et al., 2005; Hum et al., 2009). In Argentina, it is considered responsible for decreasing reproductive efficiency, causing severe economic losses (Bryner et al., 1964, Campero, 2000). In Uruguay, a study conducted by Repiso et al. (2005) revealed a prevalence of BGB in bulls of 28.1% and predial of 37.0%, using the technique of direct immunofluorescence (IFD) as a diagnostic test. Bovine Polledness analysis in breeds of european origin


Introduction: Recently, mutations associated with the polled phenotype have been found in bovine breeds of European origin. The polled phenotype is dominant, so that a polled animal can have 1 or 2 copies of the gene. All the offspring of a bull with 2 copies of the polled gene (homozygous) will be polled, but if the bull presents 1 single copy of the gene (heterozygous) it will be a carrier of the antler gene.
